The benefits of using Grodan® stone wool for cultivation
The use of stone wool growing media offers many advantages. Thanks to the controlled manufacturing process, this growth medium is of a consistently high quality. The sterile production under extreme temperature ensures that the product is clean. Its unique fibre also makes the cultivation on stone wool growing media very easy to control. The grower can administer the precise amount of water and nutrients the crops need in a very directed and controlled manner, to achieve optimal growing results.
What is stone wool?
Stone wool, also known as wool, rock wool or mineral wool, is made from basalt, which is solidified lava spewed from the innermost depths of the earth. In its manufactured state, stone wool can have multiple purposes, such as an insulation solution or a growing medium. Stone wool growing media used for cultivation of plants in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is pH-neutral and has air pockets that make it suitable for hydroponics, as plants need oxygen and moisture in their root zone. This type of soilless, inert growing media is ideally suited to indoor cultivation, from vegetables and floriculture to medicinal crops.
Growing on Grodan® stone wool growing media – How it works
Grodan® offers a wide range of stone wool growing media products. Our cultivation system consists of plugs, blocks and slabs. The plug is used for sowing, where the seed grows into a seedling. Then the seedling with the plug is transplanted in a block in which it is grown into a full-fledged young plant. The full-fledged young plant with block is then placed on the slab for growing to maturity and producing fruits.
When implementing Precision Growing focused on the root zone a grower will aim to influence the rootzone environment throughout the entire cultivation cycle. Every crop will go through 6 distinct growing phases. Maximise your crop’s potential with data-driven cultivation. In addition to our GroSens sensors and our e-Gro software platform, Grodan® provides its customers with crop and slab specific user advice for each growing phase within the 6-Phase Model.

Introduction to Grodan® stone wool
Growing crops without soil means growing them reliably. Because everything can be controlled.
Every decision made in the greenhouse or growing room today has a major impact on tomorrow’s results. Grodan® provides a total solution, supporting our deeply-rooted knowledge with our digital solutions to improve cultivation on stone wool from root to fruit.
Rooted in Science
A uniform growing medium – thanks to a perfectly controlled manufacturing process. This makes the quality and properties of Grodan® stone wool and this leads to precise plant behaviour thanks to an excellent root zone management.
Efficient
Water saving properties – we are all aware that fresh water is a precious resource. Stone wool is an inert medium and the water including nutrient solution that it holds is in its entirety available to the plants.
Soilless
A bountiful natural resource – Every year the earth produces 38,000 times more basalt than we use to produce stone wool. Respect for biodiversity – At a time when biodiversity is under threat, we are proud to be contributing to the safeguarding of our ecosystems.
Reliable
Food safety compliant – food safety has never been this crucial in today’s world.
Data Driven & Steerable
Maximise your crop’s potential with data-driven cultivation. Grodan® stone wool growing media are paired with sensors, a software platform and crop-specific advice, enabling precision growing. The GroSens sensors enable 24/7 real-time insight into the WC, EC and temperature of the stone wool growing media. Connect our e-Gro platform with the GroSens sensors to support your knowledge, experience and growing strategy with real-time insights and smart recommendations based on the root zone, climate, crop and harvest data. There’s a reason stone wool is the preferred choice as growing media, thanks to its compatibility with both soil-based and hydroponic cultivation systems for irrigation, lighting, automated nutrient delivery and other top precision growing techniques.
Flexible & Lightweight
A key value for Grodan® is our delivery security and reliability. We can produce and deliver our high-quality stone wool products in large and small quantities year-round, matching the wishes and needs of our customers. Stone wool is 1/10 of the weight of a bag of potting soil.
